Every year the Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab releases erotic and romantic-themed scents. We were excited to get to review a selection of this year's releases from four sections: Lupers, Shunga, Liber Amicorum -- Joannes Carolus Erlenwein, and Liber Amicorum -- Anne Wagner. All of these limited edition scents are available on their site (link below) till May 2, 2018.

Lupers

Sapphics
"Tonka, oakmoss, tolu balsam, grey amber, myrrh, and muguet."

Soft and ... hard to describe. No oakmoss or myrrh. Maybe the warm sweet brown of tonka, but not really. So, I looked up a few ingredients. Muguet is lily of the valley, but I don't really get a floral note. Grey amber is another name for ambergris. Hmm. Tolu Balsam is "warm" and "plush". Yes. Yes, that definitely. In the end I'd say it's a warm, fuzzy perfume that has a natural sweetness wrapped inside. Medium throw.

Snake's Kiss
"Snake Oil with sugar, honeycomb, and thick vanilla cream."

Sugary and vanilla cream, but not quite "cream soda". Ooh this is nice. I don't do a lot of "sweet" scents, so this is just the right amount. The throw is lower than I prefer. Compared to Snake Skin, I'll reach for Skin every time because I love leather notes, but if you like the sweeter blends, this is definitely a good one.

Shunga

Caressing the Wild Rabbit
"White tea, honeycomb, vanilla orchid, and a drop of soft sandalwood."

A very nice, white floral with a slightly warm base. On my skin it wants to go a bit soapy and plastic-y, all of which combines to remind me of my the potpourri in my grandmother's bathroom .... It then smells like lotion / sunscreen, before going back to soapy potpourri.

Kinoko
"Mushroom musk, oakmoss, and rooibos leaf."

Ew. A yellow bite with a strong initial throw. Sour. Acrid. And something similar to the Lab's "autumn leaves" note.

Mirror of the Famous Generals of Japan
"Leather, black pepper, cassis, khus, and black amber."

Definite amber / cassis with a warm spice and black pepper when it goes on. Then some leather sneaks out for me to smell before the whole thing fades within minutes. I am so sad that this fades on my skin! It's a lovely, rich blend. It does linger on the skin if I put my nose on my wrist, but there it smells much sweeter.

Monk and Actor
"Soft auburn musk, clove bud, honeyed patchouli, oakmoss absolute, cashmere labdanum, cedar, and mimosa blossom."

Goes on with drunken headiness and lots of clove. Quickly settles to a lovely honeyed cashmere musk with a bit of clove underneath. Soft with a low throw, sweet, and warm.

The Pearl in the Volcano
"Rice milk, warm myrrh, red currant, red amber cream, and a trickle of vetiver."

Definitely foodie. It almost tries to go gingerbread at first, but it's too creamy. Still, it has that same warm and subtle spice that gingerbread does. The vetiver is underneath, giving the whole thing a slight edge. At least all of that stands for the first few minutes. This quickly shifts to heavy on the rice milk, gaining a perfume-y head and losing the vetiver completely. The warm spice hangs around keeping it consistently foodie ... which seems weird to me given the inspiration. This eventually settles into something less foodie, but the throw also fades.

Woman Dragging Her Aroused Lover Across a Bridge
"Sweet amber and rosewood, wet oak beams, smoky vanilla husk, ambrette seed, and hinoki wood."

It goes on smoky and herby with a bite of bright musk. Turns much more towards the wood notes when it settles. It goes on with a medium-to-strong throw that fades into the wood notes before becoming too faint to really smell (within an hour or so). While super faint on my wrist, the vanilla manages to come out soft and sugary.

Liber Amicorum -- Joannes Carolus Erlenwein

Some Heraldry
"Black leather accord, Australian sandalwood, ambrette seed, incense ash, and tobacco absolute."

Very bright with a fairly strong throw. It's almost floral (the ambrette seed?) with an almost acrid bite and possibly some underlying sandalwood. After an hour or so, it's more leather with tobacco and sandalwood.

Liber Amicorum -- Anne Wagner

The Bird of Prey
"Feathery brown musk and hay absolute with orris and leather."

This is a very low throw. I almost thought my skin ate it completely, but for a couple hours I can smell it if I directly sniff my wrist. Oddly sweet, slightly musky, and faintly warm spice -- not at all what I was expecting.

Lupers

Snake's Kiss
"Snake Oil with sugar, honeycomb, and thick vanilla cream."

Out of the imp, a really nice sweet honey smell and oddly enough, a slight lemon mix to it. Very light sweetness, not heavy or overbearing. On the skin, the scent loses a bit of the lemon impression and the sweetness is less intense. A bit of honey and vanilla surfaces over time. Out of all the scents this is by far my favorite, and I usually don't like sweet stuff.

Shunga

Caressing the Wild Rabbit
"White tea, honeycomb, vanilla orchid, and a drop of soft sandalwood."

The tea and orchid come first, with just a hint of honey. Like with Some Heraldry, the majority of the aromas disappear, leaving only a hint of the sandalwood. While a very nice scent, it is not particularly remarkable at either first or last blush.

Kinoko
"Mushroom musk, oakmoss, and rooibos leaf."

Immediate impression of musk and moss. When applied to my skin the musk predominates, but with the rooibos emerging. After some time on my skin the musk and moss fade back, leaving the rooibos. Although this initially sounded like an earthy combination of scents, it comes across as quite fresh and modern. Not something I would wear on a regular basis.

Mirror of the Famous Generals of Japan
"Leather, black pepper, cassis, khus, and black amber."

First rush of pepper hits me, but then fades into the leather. On the skin the leather retreats and the pepper comes forward. The pepper stays with me for a while, but then goes, leaving the leather and other aromas. The pepper isn't necessarily unpleasant, but it's not my favorite either.

Woman Dragging Her Aroused Lover Across a Bridge
"Sweet amber and rosewood, wet oak beams, smoky vanilla husk, ambrette seed, and hinoki wood."

Strong aroma of rose at first with the vanilla undertone. On the skin, I get more of the sweet amber with the woodsy aromas not far behind. Over time all other notes fade while the sweet amber prevails. Nevertheless, out of all the scents I tried, this is my favorite.

Liber Amicorum -- Joannes Carolus Erlenwein

Some Heraldry
"Black leather accord, Australian sandalwood, ambrette seed, incense ash, and tobacco absolute."

Sandalwood hits my nose first, then the tobacco and ash. Upon application it almost immediately disappears as a scent on my skin; however, the leather aroma re-emerges and stays. This and the Caressing one are nice, but I didn't like the speed at which either scent vanished with barely a trace.

Lupers

Sapphics
"Tonka, oakmoss, tolu balsam, grey amber, myrrh, and muguet."

In the imp: soft floral, soapy, and a little old fashioned (possibly the muguet here).
On first touch: instantly blooms into a big, fresh floral, with a hint of gardenia.
Over time: mellows into a beautiful floral with a touch of powder. A lovely classic scent with staying power. My favorite of the bunch. 4.5 out of 5.

Shunga

Monk and Actor
"Soft auburn musk, clove bud, honeyed patchouli, oakmoss absolute, cashmere labdanum, cedar, and mimosa blossom."

In the imp: oriental floral with musk and cedar prominent.
On first touch: the patchouli comes forward very quickly, with the oakmoss and cedar not far behind.
Over time: this blossoms into a soft oriental floral. A little old fashioned, which I find charming. 4 out of 5.

The Pearl in the Volcano
"Rice milk, warm myrrh, red currant, red amber cream, and a trickle of vetiver."

In the imp: vetiver and amber / resin (a bit of a tang here).
On first touch: warm floral, vetiver, and touch of fruit.
Over time: this settles in beautifully, with the milk coming forward adding to the warmth initially provided by the amber / myrrh combination. 4 out of 5.

Liber Amicorum -- Anne Wagner

The Bird of Prey
"Feathery brown musk and hay absolute with orris and leather."

In the imp: almond with water notes.
On first touch: almond.
Over time: almond and a light floral. I'm surprised I'm not picking up anything else. I do like almond though, so I enjoyed this throughout my day. 4 out of 5.
