Meet the Kittie family: Father, Mother, Kiki and Lana — oh, yes, and their pet, Phoebe Frederique aka Mousie. (Don't worry. The Kitties are vegetarians; they would never hurt Mousie.) Mother Kittie believes in free fashion, which means she allows her girls to wear anything they want — even stripes paired with polka dots! It turns out that Kiki has a real gift for fashion, unlike younger sister Lana.
Then one day ... surprise! While blowing out the candles on her birthday cake, Kiki is struck in head when a pile of fashion magazines fall off a shelf. Suddenly, she is no longer plain ol' Kiki, but Fashion Kitty! Among her amazing powers: "Brain that can mix and match hundreds of outfits in a second" and "Ears that hear the distress call of someone in need of fashion help." Look out, world, here comes Fashion Kitty!
Little girls who love cats, fashion or the color pink will love Fashion Kitty. To begin, the unusual art style and coloring. The characters are all geometrical shapes and curvy smiles; just as a little girl might draw them in her notebook. Additionally, the panels are all colored in shades of gray and pink, with black outlines. Lots of pink!
Oh, yeah, and one special treat. In the middle of the book, several pages are divided into three sections. Cut along the dotted lines and mix and match outfits to your heart's content.
The characters are a lot of fun, too. Mother and Father are kind and understanding. Kiki and Lana mostly get along, but do argue, as sisters are wont to do. And Kiki is a sweet girl; by the end, she has won over an adversary and everyone has learned an important lesson about forgiveness and friendship.
Fashion Kitty is a treat. It's like a frothy strawberry shake, or a fuzzy pink blanket. Buy a copy for yourself, for one of those down days when you need a pick-me-up, or for the sweet little girl in your life.
Note: I found Fashion Kitty in the bookstore shelved in the juvenile fiction section, not in the graphic novel section.
