Super Women: An Interview With Supernatural's LilyAn Interview With Actress Jessica Harmon
Interviewing the cast and crew of Supernatural for an awesome comics webzine is not a job with much of a downside, but one challenge I do face is the problem of spoilers. Ms Jessica Harmon's role is in a currently-unaired episode of the show — the season's final storyline, in fact. This interview took place in early March, shortly after she filmed the part, but due to the nature of Ms Harmon's role it was felt that it would be best to hold back on running this interview until closer to the airdate.
Please be advised that the following interview contains spoilers for the season two finale of Supernatural.
Sequential Tart: First, I'd really like to hear about how you got your start — what drew you to acting? When did you realize it was what you wanted to do?
Jessica Harmon: Actually my whole family is in the industry. My father Alan is a director, my mom Cynde is a producer and my brother Richard is an actor, so it was inevitable I suppose. I think when you grow up on a film set you become either addicted to being apart of film making or you never want to associate with the industry in any way. Basically what I'm saying is I'm an addict.
ST: Has there been a film or show you've worked on that leaps out as a really positive memory? Any that you particularly learned from?
JH: I love what I do so I have positive memories from pretty much every show I've done. If I had to choose I'd say Black Christmas because everyone on the movie was so much fun to work with plus the premiere was right before Christmas and the movie came out Christmas day so I just remember it being a very exciting time. I'd say I learn something new every time I go to work. That's the thing about the film industry — there's just so many people with such a variety of jobs that you can't help but pick new things up all the time.
ST: Can you tell us a little about your upcoming role on Supernatural, and about the episode in general?
JH: I play Lily, a slightly goth loner who's having a very difficult time with the fact that she has supernatural abilities, especially now that she's woken up in the middle of no where with a group of strangers. We're filming in this really creepy ghost town in the middle of nowhere so it's not difficult to act scared, I honestly feel like the whole crew could disappear and no one would know (I have a very over-active imagination)!
ST: What's shooting the episode been like?
JH: Terrible — the cast is so demanding ... I'm kidding, there's actually a very positive family-like vibe to the crew, which makes coming onto a show very welcoming. The actors are really great too, everyone's very funny and hardworking, it's just a great environment to work in.
ST: Do you have any other projects in the near future that you'd like to talk about?
JH: I have a movie that will be premiering the first week of April on Lifetime, it's called Passions Web. The cast includes Julie Warner, who plays my sister, and Sebastian Spence. It's a great movie so please check it out!!
ST: Are you interested in other kinds of work in the entertainment industry, or is acting where it's at for you?
JH: Acting is definitely number one, but I have taken an interest in my mother's production company, so I suppose producing is a possibility for the future. I certainly have a lot to learn before that happens though.
ST: What do you do in your spare time? Any hobbies or sports you're especially into?
JH: I love to hike. Unfortunatly I have arthritis in my knee, which makes sports a little difficult, but I still try to spend as much time as I can being active outdoors.
ST: Anything else you'd like to talk about?
JH: Just please watch the episode, it's awesome, and anyone can feel free to write me! My website is under construction right now but please add me to your friends on MySpace.
I'm such a loser for talking about MySpace!
